The ground breaking partnership enables the Thorney Motorsport operation to operate from a specially created Swift Kon Tiki 649 motorhome which will act as race support for the racing operation as well as to be utilised as show support vehicle for the YXZ1000 models at shows around the UK.

John Thorne, team principal of Yamaha YXZ1000 Racing confirms;

“We are delighted, we spent a long time looking for the right kind of motorhome and to be honest there really was only one choice – the Swift Kontiki”

The teams requirements were quite stringent, a American RV was unsuitable as they are too wide to navigate the narrow roads of mid Wales where the team races in the Britpart MSA British Cross Country Championship but a high level of specification was needed to give the right level of support for the drivers in the Yamaha Driver of the year Competition. Thorne continues;

“It seems like I went to every caravan show in the UK in this search, I found its not easy to get a motorhome that is luxurious enough for our needs but robust enough to cope with driving to off road races, for the most part we are parked in fields or on the sides of mountains so the motorhome had to be able to cope with that”

Swift Group are no stranger to motorsport having also partnered with a British Rally Championship team so their faith in their product in the harsh environment of a rally service area is clear.

Andrew Newhall, Head of Marketing for Swift Group;

“This is a great partnership for Swift Group, not only do we get the opportunity to show off our product to potentially a new group of potential customers but we also get to demonstrate just how strong and reliable our motorhomes are, Yamaha have been exacting in their requirements so for our motorhome to be chosen is something we are rightly proud of.”

The team has a busy schedule this season, not only racing and developing the team Sport Shift models but also supporting the 20+ Yamaha Customer Teams competing in four championships across the UK as they fight not only for the championships but also to be crowned winner of the Yamaha Driver of the year.

Thorne concludes:

“We are on the road for 32 races and events this year, that’s a pretty gruelling schedule but having the Swift Kontiki is certainly going to make life a lot more comfortable both for us and our customer teams.”
